A Hidden Garden in New Jersey

Just outside New York City, Greenwood Gardens feels like a place you could easily pass by without ever knowing what is hidden behind its gates.

Tucked away in Short Hills, New Jersey, this historic garden is filled with winding stone paths, fountains, old trees, and unexpected architectural details. It doesn’t feel like a typical public garden — it feels more like stepping into someone’s secret estate.

I visited on a beautiful summer day, and this is what I found.

Layers of History

One of the things I loved most about Greenwood Gardens was how the architecture seemed to appear unexpectedly between the trees.

Old stone stairways, weathered walls, sculptures, and small garden structures give the property a sense of history that you don’t usually find in a typical botanical garden.

Every few steps, there seemed to be another detail worth stopping for — and another reason to take a photo.

A Garden That Feels Like Another World

What I loved most about Greenwood Gardens was how different each corner felt.
One moment I was walking through an old stone garden, and a few steps later, the view completely changed.

It never felt like a perfectly polished botanical garden — and that was exactly what made it beautiful.

Plan Your Visit to Greenwood Gardens

Greenwood Gardens is one of those places that feels hidden, even though it’s surprisingly close to New York City. If you’re planning a visit, I recommend giving yourself at least 75 minutes to explore — and a little longer if you enjoy stopping for photos or simply sitting in the garden.

The garden is located at 274 Old Short Hills Road, Short Hills, New Jersey 07078. Visitors enter the property by vehicle, check in at the ticket kiosk, and are then directed to the on-site parking area. Parking is complimentary.

For the 2026 season, Greenwood Gardens is open Friday through Sunday, 10:00 AM–5:00 PM, from May 1 through November 8. The last admission is at 3:30 PM. Advance tickets are strongly recommended because walk-in admission is subject to availability.

Adult admission is $15, seniors 65+ and students with ID are $10, children ages 3–12 are $5, and children under 3 are free.

One thing to know before visiting: this is a historic garden with uneven paths, stone stairways, and changes in elevation, so comfortable walking shoes are a much better choice than dress shoes. Much of the historic landscape is not wheelchair- or stroller-accessible, although accessible parking and restrooms are available.

Photography for ordinary visitors is allowed within Greenwood’s rules, but tripods, drones, screens and props are not permitted, and formal posed or special-occasion photo sessions are prohibited.

Quick tip: Arrive earlier in the day if you want a quieter walk and cleaner photographs. Take your time here — Greenwood is less about rushing from one attraction to another and more about discovering the small details along the way.

Is Greenwood Gardens Worth Visiting?

Absolutely — especially if you enjoy quiet places, historic architecture, and gardens that feel a little different from the usual tourist attractions.

What surprised me most was how much there was to discover in such a peaceful setting. Decorative walls, old stone structures, fountains, sculptures, flowers, and hidden pathways made me want to keep looking around the next corner.

Greenwood Gardens is perfect for a slow afternoon, a peaceful walk, or anyone looking for a beautiful day trip in New Jersey without traveling far from New York City.

For me, the best part wasn’t one particular view. It was the feeling of wandering through a place where every corner seemed to have its own little story.

If you’re looking for a hidden garden in New Jersey, Greenwood Gardens is definitely one to put on your list.
