Untermyer Gardens in Yonkers: A Beautiful Free Garden Near NYC

You don’t have to travel far from New York to feel like you’ve gone somewhere completely different.

That’s how I felt walking into Untermyer Gardens in Yonkers, New York.

I came expecting a beautiful garden.

What I found was a place that made me want to slow down and stay a little longer.

The Moment You Walk In

The Walled Garden is the kind of place that makes you stop for a second.

Long waterways, fountains, trees, and beautiful architecture stretch out in front of you.

Inspired by historic Indo-Persian gardens, the space feels peaceful, grand, and surprisingly far away from New York.

Don’t Rush Through This Garden

Untermyer Gardens isn’t a place to take one photo and leave.

Keep walking.

The scenery changes as you go — stone steps, garden paths, old architecture, wooded areas, and views toward the Hudson River.

This is one of those places that gets better when you slow down.

Don’t Miss the Temple of Love

And then there’s the Temple of Love.

Yes, that’s really its name.

Perched above rocks, waterfalls, and greenery, the round temple overlooks the Hudson River and the Palisades.

It feels completely different from the formal Walled Garden.

A little wilder.

A little more romantic.

And definitely worth the walk.

If You Love Taking Photos…

Bring your camera.

The big garden views are beautiful, but I loved the smaller details too — the arches, stairs, pathways, and little corners you discover along the way.

And yes, you can absolutely come alone.

I did.

I took my own photos, wandered around, and had a pretty good time by myself. 😆

What I Loved Most

The prettiest photo spot wasn’t actually what I liked most about Untermyer Gardens.

It was being able to walk without rushing.

Stopping when something caught my eye.

Feeling the breeze.

Sitting for a moment.

Sometimes you don’t need a big trip.

You just need somewhere beautiful enough to make you slow down.

The garden has free parking for about 75 cars. Additional street parking is available along North Broadway, with both metered and unmetered spaces.

Good to Know
Wear comfortable shoes. If you explore beyond the Walled Garden, expect stairs, hills, and uneven paths.

Pets are not allowed, except ADA-defined service animals.

Is Untermyer Gardens Worth Visiting?

For me, yes.

Go when you want to get out of the house but don’t feel like planning a big trip.

Go if you love gardens, architecture, photography, or simply walking somewhere beautiful.

And give yourself enough time to wander.

Untermyer Gardens isn’t just somewhere to take a pretty picture.

It’s somewhere to spend a good afternoon.

Just Today, OK.

A good day doesn’t always have to be something big.

Sometimes it’s walking somewhere beautiful.

Stopping for a minute.

Taking one photo you love.

And realizing that was enough.
